Amelia Hough-Ross is a technologist, community builder, and self-described "data dancer." She currently serves as Managing Director of Data & AI at the American Diabetes Association, where she is helping the nonprofit modernize its technology practices. Previously, Amelia was a Senior Cloud Engineer at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), where she supported researchers with cloud infrastructure and explored generative AI applications using Amazon Bedrock. Her career spans roles at Progressive Insurance, Sherwin-Williams, Expedia, and Companion Data Services (a subsidiary of Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina), where she served as Deputy CTO. Amelia holds a BA in Computer Science from Smith College and an MBA from Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management. She is an AWS Community Builder, holds multiple AWS certifications, and is a frequent speaker at conferences including Wonder Women Tech, Grace Hopper Celebration, and vBrownBag. Episode 154: Are You Techie Enough?
March 3rd, 2026 | 49 mins 37 secs
Sean, Kelly, and guest Amelia Hough-Ross explore what it really means to be "techie" — and why limiting labels can hold people back. From Amelia's journey through animatronics, national labs, and nonprofit data leadership to Kelly's evolution from teacher to AI trainer, the conversation unpacks how curiosity, persistence, and productive struggle matter more than any credential. The trio discusses imposter syndrome, the value of being a generalist in a specialist world, and why being a cheerleader for someone's learning can change the trajectory of their career.
