Kelly Powers returned to the classroom in 2023 to redesign and deliver a Middle School curriculum and pathway for Hackley School to engage all students. Before returning to the classroom, she was a member of Cornell Tech's K-12 Teacher in Residence team, and Co-PI on an NSF-funded grant to advance CT/CS with elementary school teachers. She coached and developed teachers at two large Bronx Elementary Schools to integrate CT and CS into their curriculum. During this time, Powers was deeply involved with the MIT AI Daily curriculum, piloting it, and mentoring teachers to deliver curriculum in New York and New Mexico. Her teaching experience is centered on Computer Science Education in grades 6-12 for all students.
Powers returned to New York in 2015 to work as the Director of Computer Science and Technology Initiatives at the South Bronx Early College Academy and taught students, developed teachers, designed a CS curriculum, and collaborated with teachers to integrate CT.
Powers, a former project director for the EDC-led MassCAN (Massachusetts Computer Attainment Network) and co-PI on the NSF-funded Exploring Computer Science Project, advanced statewide initiatives to broaden participation in computing and worked to develop CS MA standards. In December 2013, officials honored Powers as the 2012–2013 Massachusetts STEM Teacher of the Year. She co-founded the Greater Boston Computer Science Teachers Association Chapter and served as president from 2010 to 2014.
